The Department of Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) is seeking a M.D. or Ph.D. for the Texas Children's Microbiome Center. Academic appointment will be at the level of Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine. 

TCH is the nation's largest children's hospital and is ranked No. 4 in US in U.S. News and World Report's Honor Roll of Best Children's Hospitals. TCH is one of the largest pediatric solid organ transplantation programs with over 107 solid organ transplants performed in 2018.

The recent opening of the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower adds 640,000-square-feet to the TCH Main Campus, providing an additional six technologically-advanced operating rooms (for a total of 25 operating rooms) and increasing critical care capacity to 84 pediatric ICU beds and 48 cardiovascular ICU beds. TCH is home to two elite programs, pediatric cardiology and heart surgery and pediatric pulmonary medicine, both ranked No. 1 in U.S. by U.S. News and World Report. In 2012 the Pavilion for Women, a center for high-risk obstetrics, gynecology, fetal medicine and fetal surgery opened, currently with 6, 000 annual deliveries and gynecologic services for adult women. 

The recent opening of the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower necessitates additional support in transfusion medicine and coagulation services. The position will share clinical services that include coagulation, trauma, apheresis, post-partum hemorrhage, neonatal/intrauterine transfusion, and blood banking.  Located in Texas Medical Center, the largest medical campus in the world, this position also offers exceptional opportunities for collaboration and research activities across numerous institutions. 
Postdoctoral Associates at Texas Children's Hospital have primary appointments in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, and are expected to contribute to educational and scholarly activities in the Department of Pathology based at Texas Children's Hospital, as well as pathology resident and fellow education.

Job Purpose

The Postdoctoral Associate position associated with the Clinical Metagenomics fellowship is intended to merge the clinical and research aspects of microbiology and metagenomics and prepare individuals for a variety of future career options. Conventional medical microbiology, molecular microbiology, clinical metagenomics, bioinformatics, multi-omic analyses, and microbial ecology, as well as utilizing cutting-edge technology in innovative applications to patient care will be integrated in this position.

Job Duties

  • Researches and develops new diagnostic tests based on microbiome science and evolving concepts in metagenomic medicine.
  • WGS-based strain typing (bacterial pathogens) in collaboration with infection control and variant tracking of SARS-COV-2.
  • Multi-omic analyses in various microbiome-focused projects with clinical collaborators.
  • Bioinformatics-based development, optimization, and implementation of tools and pipelines.
  • Prepares manuscripts and presentations.
  • Grant writing and budget projections.  
  • Trains students and clinical fellows in other specialties.  
  • IRB protocol preparation and compliance monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.
