The Behavioral Plasticity Research Institute (BPRI) is a newly funded NSF Biological Integration Institute focused on understanding how behavioral plasticity in grasshoppers (i.e., locust phase polyphenism) leads to locust plagues and its ecological implications. The BPRI has a Postdoctoral Fellow position available in the laboratories of Drs. Dierick and Gabbiani in the Departments of Genetics/Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be involved in cutting edge research studying how epigenetic changes related to locust phase polyphenism affect the properties of neurons in the visual system of locusts. The techniques involved will encompass electrophysiology, fluorescence imaging, genetic engineering and genomics.

Job Purpose

Postdoctoral Associates are trainees working in an apprenticeship mode in preparation for a career as a scientific professional.

Job Duties
  • Plans, directs and conducts specialized and advanced research experiments.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data.
  • May establish new research protocols and procedures.
  • Summarizes research findings and publish results in research journals. 
  • May be responsible for laboratory operations.
  • May supervise research staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: MD or Ph.D in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • Experience Required: None Required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: None Required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with advanced molecular genetics, insect transgenesis and/or single cell recordings are considered advantageous.
