The Pediatric Hematology Oncology Section in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital is recruiting outpatient Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Advanced Practice Practitioners.

Job Purpose

Provides advanced medical care to patients in an acute clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.



Scope of practice:

  • Sees patients within outpatient hematology clinic. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team including attending physicians, nurse coordinators, child life, social work, etc.
  • Provides education to patients and families related to hematologic diagnoses and therapies.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings including medical, nursing, and pharmacy personnel to provide optimal patient care.
  • Educate and collaborate with medical trainees including residents and fellows.
  • Provides all hematologic care for patients in an outpatient setting.
  • Provides support to other team members in the care of hematology patients including coordination of care, consenting, and arranging procedures/follow up appointments.
  • Ensures appropriate follow up of patients under their care.

Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in in Nursing.
    • For Nurse Practitioners: Masters degree in in Nursing.  Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN), and with a mandatory acute care certification (CPNP-AC).

    •  For Physician Assistant: Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.

  • Experience Required: Relevant experience preferred but not required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
    • For Physician Assistant: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. 

    • For Nurse Practitioners: Pediatric Acute Care Certification (CPNP-AC) 

    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
