Summary
The Optometrist provides comprehensive primary eye care services in an academic medical center setting, supporting Baylor College of Medicine's clinical, educational and research missions. This role delivers high-quality optometric care to a diverse patient population at Harris Health. They collaborate closely with ophthalmologists and interdisciplinary care teams, and may contribute to teaching, clinical research, and quality improvement initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and patient communication skills. Additionally, will have the ability to work effectively in a team‑based, academic clinical environment.
This is a part-time, benefits eligible position at 0.6 FTE, scheduled at 24 hours per week. This position is located at Harris County Clinics.
Job Duties
- Performs comprehensive eye examinations, including refraction, diagnosis, and management of ocular and vision conditions.
- Diagnoses and manages refractive errors, binocular vision disorders, dry eye disease, ocular surface disease, and common ocular pathologies.
- Co‑manages patients with ophthalmologists, including pre‑ and post‑operative care as appropriate.
- Prescribes corrective lenses and therapeutic treatments within scope of licensure.
- Utilizes diagnostic testing (to support clinical decision‑making.
- Maintains accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record in compliance with BCM and regulatory standards.
- Participates in interdisciplinary care teams, and case discussions.
- Supports educational activities for medical students, residents, fellows, and trainees, as appropriate to appointment type.
- Contributes to clinical protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety efforts.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD).
- Current license as an Optometrist by the Texas Optometry Board.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with underserved populations.
