Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented medical assistant II to work within the Division of Vascular Surgery. The Medical Assistant will be required to provide ample support to clinicians and patients before and after their appointments. The Medical Assistant may not be assigned to a specific provider, but may work with multiple providers to provide high-quality patient care.

Job Duties

  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Conducts patient outreach and post operative patient follow up calls.
  • Manages in-basket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals.
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork.
  • Performs clinical and administrative responsibilities such as charting, filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, suture/staple removal and assists with in-office procedures.
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, notes the primary complaint/reason for patient's visit, and enters information in the electronic medical record.
  • Instructs patients on medication management at the direction of physician or APP and provides education for medical procedures.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Assists in scheduling surgeries in both St. Luke’s Hospital Epic and BCM Baylor College of Medicine Epic systems.
  • Delivers staff education, clinical in-services, and /or participates in clinical staff meetings based on the needs of the department and as appropriate to scope of practice of an MA.
  • Supports the clinic / department’s compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts performance improvements activities that support the clinic/ department’s goals for quality, patient experience, patient safety and/or efficiency.
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic person.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
