The Division of Thoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant II to work under direct supervision with clinical leadership on patient care. The chosen candidate will be proactive and thorough in performance of duties and have a positive, communicative, and collaborative approach to patient service.

Job Duties

  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, including but not limited to, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, and current medications and presenting problem.
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, and enters information in the electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Notes the primary complaint or reason for patient’s visit.
  • Provides for patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights in accordance with the Health Insurance.
  • Portability and Accountability Act guidelines.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment for Physician.
  • Assists with procedures as needed.
  • Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician.
  • Instructs patients on general care and medical procedures.
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  • Performs clerical or administrative responsibilities such as accurately filing, or scanning patient medical records, obtain lab or x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail and medical records to the appropriate clinic personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thoracic surgery experience.
  • Epic experience.
