Job Purpose

The Section of Immunology, Allergy & Rheumatology is seeking a competent level and/or minimally novice Medical Assistant who is proficient in delivering patient care in the ambulatory care setting and a basic general knowledge of medical assisting work. Performs patient care responsibilities and provides clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting. This position will be assisting in the overall day to day operations of the Rheumatology Clinical Practice at the BSLMC-McNair Campus. Our Rheumatology currently consists of six (6) Rheumatology physicians and will be part of team of three (3) other medical assistants and one (1) nurse. 

Job Duties

  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters information in the electronic medical record. Notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit. Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs. 
  • Assists with the check-in and initial vital signs of patients for two allergy providers. 
  • Sets up instruments and equipment for Physician. Assist with procedures as needed.
  • Assists physicians with the rhinoscopy procedure and allergy testing equipment and assists with administering allergens for testing of allergic reactions. 
  • Maintains patient and service rooms in a neat and orderly condition. Take inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Assists with maintaining stock of clinical supplies and inventories supplies needed for use of allergy testing. Allergy practice currently has two exam rooms with the possibility of also maintaining two other rooms. 
  • Assists the allergy RN with scheduling flu shot patients and immunotherapy shot patients. 
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience is required. 
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA) is required. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior rheumatology background, but not required.
  • Experience with BCM's MRN system: EPIC.
  • Experience with processing and completing prior authorization tasks for medications. 


Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.

Will assist in supporting other college initiatives such as the COVID testing drive thru as clinical support and also be part of a rotating schedule to handle calls under the LIVE answer initiative where our clinic receives live calls from our patients.
