Salary Range:  $40,862 - $50,665
FLSA Status:  Nonexempt
Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Medical Assistant II to work with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Texas Medical Center. This position will perform patient care responsibilities, provide clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting.

 

This position is approximately 75% administrative and 25% clinical.

Job Duties

  • Supports the providers in a cardiothoracic clinic.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs and venipuncture (blood draws).
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  • Manages in-basket messages and coordinates incoming patient referrals.
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork.
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Schedules surgeries. 
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies.
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation, notes the primary complaint/reason for patient's visit, and enters information in the electronic medical record 
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, AAH, AAMP, or NPS).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous experience using electronic health records.
  • Clinic administrative experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Team player.
