The Department of Medicine's Hall Garcia Cardiology team is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant who is proficient in delivering patient care in the ambulatory care setting. The MA should have experience with scheduling patient office visits, surgeries, tests and procedures. The Medical Assistant performs patient care responsibilities, provides clerical/administrative support in a clinical setting, and provides administrative support to faculty and the education program. The candidate will also be responsible for providing guidance to entry-level Medical Assistants.

Job Duties

  • Schedules patient office visits, surgeries, test and procedures; works with Specialist on specific patient needs.
  • Confirms patient appointments 1 – 2 weeks prior to date of service by ensuring patients receive new patient paperwork to complete prior to appointment and are aware to bring any medical records that are relevant to their visit; ensures that patients are scheduled with the appropriate provider.  
  • Obtains referring provider information and requests relevant medical records and referrals prior to appointment as needed.
  • Displays proficiency in ability to successfully obtain vital signs.
  • Schedules procedures performed in the operating room.
  • Assists with in-office procedures.
  • Manages high volume clinics and calls.
  • Answers patient calls in a competent, professional and timely manner.
  • Assists clinicians with medication refills and prior authorizations as needed.
  • Assists clinicians with imaging orders and prior authorizations as needed.
  • Assists clinicians with medical record review to determine scheduling needs of patient.
  • Frequently utilizes electronic health record (Epic) in interactions with patients and referring provider offices for documentation.
  • Frequently utilizes electronic health record (Epic) to upload patient records.
  • Frequently utilizes imaging software (PACS) to upload images.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, time management, teamwork, organization, multi-tasking and professionalism skills in all aspects of the role.
  • Assists with ECGs, treadmill assist, rooming, and intake.
  • Cross-trains to become proficient in multiple tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a cardiology clinic.
  • Experience with Epic EHR.
