Summary

The Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery is in search of a Medical Assistant I to join our clinical team.  A successful candidate will positively contribute to our patients' experience by providing compassionate care, and being a reliable member of the team.  

 

Given the current pandemic, combined with the nature of our practice, the candidate must be comfortable working around patients with potentially infectious diseases, understanding all precautions to protect staff will be taken and adequate PPD will be provided.  The candidate may be asked to work in COVID-19 drive thru testing site on occasion.  Ideally, the candidate will have an interest in surgery, with the desire to work closely with surgeons and learners in an academic setting.  

Job Duties

  • Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
  • Manages in-basket messages.
  • Manages and coordinates incoming patient referrals.
  • Enters orders for patient tests and obtains proper paperwork.
  • Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Takes inventory of clinic supplies and order supplies as needed.
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs.
  • Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters information in the electronic medical record.
  • Notes the primary complaint/reason for patient's visit.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment for physician.
  • Processes and sterilizes clinic instrumentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • No experience required.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA). New employees who are not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge or experience in an Otolaryngology practice.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and clinical staff as well as outside referral sources.
