The BCM Ventures department is looking for a Lead Accounting Coordinator for a hybrid role in Houston, Texas. The Lead Accounting Coordinator will support the College’s commercialization initiatives through the administration and management of routine financial tasks flowing through BCM Ventures (BCMV). The Lead Coordinator will perform intermediate to complex financial and accounting transactions, support database management, provide data for financial analytics/reporting, and deliver on financial activities related to the hundreds of commercial agreements, licenses, patents and disclosures, as well as initiatives coming through the commercial pipeline. 


Focus areas will include transactional day-to-day activities involving license income distributions, annual maintenance fees, royalty and milestone invoicing, legal patent and annuities invoice processing and additional functions to support BCMV finance operations. This position will support the documentation and analysis of business financial transactions, which will help improve the efficiency of workflows and processes within BCMV, drive critical decision-making opportunities for BCMV financial and operational leadership and support strategic initiative growth. 


Due to the volume, magnitude and complexity of the financial functions within BCM Ventures, we are seeking a seasoned individual who possesses advanced skills in finance, accounting, and mathematics plus a strong interest in supporting the technology innovation sector of academic commercialization. 

The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional with a finance or accounting background. The Lead Accounting Coordinator has experience in handling multi-million dollar accounts. The applicant is self-sufficient and has experience in process improvement, strategic improvements, and is comfortable with SAP and Excel.

Job Duties

  • Prepares journal entries for accounts, transactions, license income disbursements/royalty payments and invoices.
  • Ensures that all account activity is recorded accurately and timely.
  • Supports invoice distribution, processing, reconciliation and record-keeping for various commercial activities such as licensee annual maintenance fees, royalty and milestone payments, etc.
  • Generates commercial invoices and sends according to College policy.
  • Directly responds, resolves and troubleshoots questions related to distribution verification, reconciliation, missing payments and other inquiries regarding license royalty payments.
  • Generates and sends license income distribution letters to faculty inventors, BCM departments/centers and affiliated sponsors/institutions.
  • Reviews BCMV cost centers for legal-patent and annuity invoice payments and submits budget revisions to ensure payment is directed from appropriate cost centers.
  • Works with BCMV team members and leaders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Six years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field plus two years of relevant experience
• Possesses a basic understanding of accounting principles and techniques
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook)
• SAP experience preferred
• Concur experience preferred 
• Highly organized, detail oriented, and resourceful
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Self-motivated with a proactive and forward-thinking approach in anticipating needs of the business
• Capable of multi-tasking within a fast-paced environment; ability to exercise quick judgement and maintain confidentiality 
• Collaborative and team oriented with the willingness to learn and develop
• Creative problem-solving and analytical skills
