Summary
Summer internship for exceptional high school student(s). Intern(s) will engage in research related to biodegradation of plastic waste and carbon capture by photosynthetic microbes. They will learn both basic and cutting edge techniques in microbiology and molecular biology. They will also create and deliver presentations summarizing their work. This is a part-time position, 20 hours/week.
Job Duties
- Conducts bacterial cell culture, plastic biodegradation assays, light-driven phenotype conversion assays, among other experimental and analytical techniques.
- Performs daily interactions with supervisor, keeps a lab notebook.
- Prepares and delivers a final presentation summarizing internship.
- Conducts to become better acquainted with applied microbiology.
- Develops skills needed to perform independent research.
- Develops skills needed to effectively communicate science to scientists and non-scientists.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest and enthusiasm for microbial solutions to plastic pollution and climate change.
