Summary

The candidate will be trained in lab duties associated with bacteriologic techniques, and form a team like atmosphere where collegiality and academic interests are accentuated. He will join a highly motivated group of microbiologists searching for microbial genes and functions that can transform and revolutionize medical discovery. He will be surrounded by Ph.D students, postdocs, clinicians and center directors while also learning about related projects on vaccinology, evolution, mutagenesis and drug discovery. The educational objectives of the internship will be to develop technical laboratory skills, advance knowledge in microbial research and foster collaborative research and professional development. 16 hours/week. 

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.  

Job Duties

  • Grows bacteria and testing their levels.
  • Isolates and purifies phage.
  • Tests phage and environmental samples for new phages.
  • Makes buffers and reagents.
  • Operates an evolution machine and growth bioreactors.
  • Operates a microbe catching device.
  • Grows libraries of genes and testing for function.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school or be a high school graduate (or equivalent secondary education) or enrolled in an institution of higher education. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has taken some elementary biology courses, solid knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology.
