Summary

The Intern Aide – Research will support ongoing research studies within the Texas Children’s Cancer Center Histiocytosis and Lymphoma Program Laboratory. This internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to basic translational research through structured training and guided laboratory experience. The intern will gain foundational knowledge of research techniques, assist with laboratory projects, and contribute to literature searches and data organization while working under the supervision of laboratory leadership. This summer opportunity emphasizes learning, comprehension, and practical application of core research concepts in an academic medical research environment.

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.  

Job Duties

  • Learn and apply basic translational research techniques in a laboratory setting
  • Assist with general laboratory activities, including tissue processing and tissue culture
  • Perform nucleic acid extraction, PCR, flow cytometry, and immunophenotyping under supervision
  • Support laboratory research projects through hands-on technical assistance
  • Conduct literature searches related to ongoing research studies
  • Create and maintain Excel spreadsheets for research data tracking
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations to support research communication and documentation
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and research guidelines
  • May assists with special projects/programs. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school student, undergraduate, or graduate student with an interest in biomedical or laboratory research
  • Interest in cancer research, translational research, or laboratory science
  • Basic familiarity with laboratory environments or scientific coursework
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Basic computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to learn new techniques and follow detailed instructions
