Summary

The Intern will participate in the LitMed Health AI Development Program, a structured, hands-on internship designed for graduate-level students interested in healthcare artificial intelligence. Under direct mentorship from LitMed Health’s Chief Technology Officer, the intern will contribute to the design, development, and optimization of production-grade AI systems used in real-world healthcare environments. This role offers practical experience working with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and healthcare data standards, with a strong emphasis on AI safety, data privacy, and clinical relevance.

 

This position is part‑time, requiring approximately 10 hours per week during standard working hours. The position is based in Houston, Texas and is not eligible for benefits.

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.  

Job Duties

  • Design, build, and refine context optimization pipelines for a RAG-based clinical education chatbot.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs between retrieved content granularity, token usage, and response quality in large language model applications.
  • Develop and execute AI safety testing protocols to assess chatbot responses for clinical appropriateness, accuracy, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with the technical team to deploy, manage, and iterate on production AI infrastructure using AWS cloud services.
  • Support integration of healthcare data using FHIR standards while ensuring secure handling of protected health information (PHI).
  • Apply prompt engineering, context window optimization, and model orchestration techniques to real-world healthcare AI use cases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate-level coursework in computer science, computational science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with Python and familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and large language model orchestration.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, with a preference for AWS.
  • Interest in healthcare AI applications, clinical data standards, and responsible AI deployment.
  • Curiosity about AI safety evaluation methods and working with production systems subject to privacy and regulatory requirements.
