Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will practice in an advanced role within a clinic and perioperative setting, providing Anesthesiology and Pre-Anesthesia Care services to patients. The NP will work under a delineation of clinical privileges and in collaboration with other members of the health care team (attending physician, residents, CRNA, clinic nursing staff).
Operating under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the NP assumes both independent and interdependent responsibilities in the evaluation, assessment, and optimization of pre-anesthesia patients in a clinic setting. Additionally, the NP will provide support for the Acute Pain Management Service (APMS) as needed. This position will also serve as a back-up to the on-site Ben Taub NP assigned to the APM Service.
Job Purpose
Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.
Job Duties
- Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
 - Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
 - Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
 - Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
 - Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
 - Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
 - Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
 - Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
 - Ensure that patients are optimized for anesthesia, including ordering additional testing, and obtaining appropriate consultations when appropriate. Follow up these work-ups and consults to risk-stratify patients for surgery.
 - Formulate an appropriate anesthetic plan for patients based on evaluation and discussion with supervising physician.
 - Serve as a back-up Nurse Practitioner for Ben Taub on-site acute pain management service.
 - Perform other job related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
- Education Required: Master’s degree in nursing.
 - Experience Required: None required.
 - Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), DEA, and specialty certification as required by department Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
 - May be required to obtain certification in Anesthesia Acute Pain Management.
 
- For Physician Assistant: Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
 - For Physician Assistant: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification is required by the department.
 
Preferred Qualifications
- Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner with 3-5 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Strongly prefer previous anesthesia or perioperative care experience.
 - Master of Science in Nursing.
 - Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse license from the Texas Board of Nursing. Specialty certification recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing. Specialty certification must match licensing specialty area.
 - Pre-Anesthesia and/or anesthesia pain management experience.
