The Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified Nurse Practitioner for Thoracic Surgery at Baylor St Lukes Medical Center.

Job Purpose

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.

Job Duties
  • Conducts comprehensive history and physical examination of each patient and coordinates with Attendings in developing a treatment plan
  • Performs or orders x-rays, CT scans, MRI's Electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures and interprets results
  • Administers such therapeutic procedures as chest tube removal, CVC removal, suturing, wound care and injections
  • Evaluates and modifies the plan of care as needed (under the direction of the attending physician)
  • Instructs patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, pre-operative actions and preparation, post-operative care, and home care and health maintenance
  • Prescribes, dispenses and administers pharmaceutical treatments to patients
  • Assists in coordinating with other members of the healthcare team---nurses, dietitians, chaplains, consulting physicians and social workers to provide holistic care for each patient
  • Provides health education as well as post-operative care education to patients and family members
  • Assists in providing nursing education to nurses, nursing students and other health professionals
  • Continually updates and maintains required records in the EPIC electronic medical record system
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records and writes progress notes on patient charts as to status, treatments and procedures
  • Schedule post-operative visits with BCM Lung Institute and communicates any out patient needs to clinic staff
Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree and graduation from an approved Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program required.

Preferred Qualifications


One or two years caring for Thoracic surgery patients is preferred
