The Dan Duncan Cancer Center is seeking a nurse practitioner (NP) to fill a critical role within a hospital-based setting at our McNair location. The selected candidate will provide advanced patient care to Breast oncology patients under the direction of a physician or physicians primarily in the areas of assessment, diagnosis and intervention.


  • Integrates information from the patient's health record into assessment data, including past medical and surgical history, comorbidities, family history, social history, and spiritual preferences, and their impact on the cancer diagnosis and potential treatment
  • Orders appropriate evidence- and guideline-based diagnostic testing, laboratory testing, and procedures
  • Documents clinical assessment into the medical record in a complete and timely manner
  • Demonstrates proficiency in assessment of oncologic emergencies


  • Communicates diagnosis(es) and potential treatments with patients and caregivers, anticipating and answering questions, and providing necessary education
  • Documents diagnosis(es) clearly and accurately in the medical record to support the treatment plan


  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies to manage common cancer-related episodic, acute and chronic problems
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies to prevent and treat side effects of cancer and treatment-related symptoms, modifying for toxicities when appropriate
  • Consults with healthcare professionals, patients and family/caregivers to promote shared decision making and improve patient outcomes, as well as patient satisfaction
  • Provides survivorship care, including a treatment summary and follow-up care plan, identifying interventions for physical/psychosocial needs and care coordination, and offering prevention and screening strategies to maintain wellness

Job Purpose

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.

Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in in Nursing.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
