Performs all repetitive tests which necessitate knowledge of histologic and immunohistologic techniques, related instruments, and the ability to recognize factors which directly affect procedures and results. Able to follow established procedures, recognize problems, identify causes or ask for help, and make simple corrections. Where no present criteria for decision-making are available, consults manager. Uses and monitors quality control programs and performs simple maintenance on instruments. Functions as an internal consultant in the laboratory and with other laboratories. Assists in training of others, as assigned. Functions at a maximum degree of effectiveness in professional attitude, co-worker relations, and integrity.

Position is located off-site at 2525 W. Bellfort, Houston TX.

Job Purpose

Performs histological preparation and procedures on tissue in order to aid cell pathology.

Job Duties

  • Log incoming specimens into the computer. 
  • Process specimens to be evaluated.
  • Embed and cut blocks, stain routine slides. 
  • Sign out cases.
  • Perform all procedures efficiently according to established procedures.
  • Maintain or gain knowledge of techniques, instruments, and principles by participating in continuing education through attending seminars, meetings in-services, and review of laboratory procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and orderly records of tests performed.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document quality control procedures within established guidelines.
  • Perform and document routine equipment preventive maintenance and minor repair.
  • Recognize problems, identify causes with help of manager, and take corrective action as advised by the manager.
  • Participate in stocking and maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies for work area.
  • Perform special, immunohistologic, immunofluorescence and routine stains according to procedure.
  • Perform manual or automated special stains, ISH and IHC.
  • Responsible for validating new tests.
  • Responsible for establishing policies, procedures, and protocols for testing.
  • Perform Cytology stains, cell Blocks and QC.
  • Assist in assuring laboratory readiness for all accrediting agency inspections.
  • Assist the manager and assistant manager in formulating, administrating, and analyzing goals and objective for the laboratory.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of a Histologic Technician AAS program, accredited by (NAACLS).
Five years of experience in Histology.
Certified Histology Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, histological science.
  • Graduate of a Histologic Technician AAS program, accredited by (NAACLS).
  • Ability to perform frozen sections.
  • Two years of direct experience in immunohistochemistry laboratory.
