Title: Eye Bank Technician I
Summary
Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a qualified candidate to fill an Eye Bank Technician I position with the Lions Eye Bank of Texas. The Lions Eye Bank is a 24/7, 365 operation which assists in sight enhancement and improvement by providing ocular surface tissues to surgeons throughout the Texas Gulf Coast and the United States. The Eye Bank Technician I is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank. The position works to procure tissue from the locale hospitals, morgues and funeral homes. The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research. The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
This is a per diem, hourly position requiring 8 hours of on-call availability per week. The position requires flexibility as on-call availability is required to procure cases.
The workload is based on available cases in the Conroe, TX area.
Job Duties
- Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
- Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
- Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
- Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
- Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
- Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
- Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a tissue bank, funeral home or working with next of kin is a plus.
- 2 years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
- College degree either AA, BS or BA.
- COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO.
