Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a skilled Eye Bank Technician. The Eye Bank Technician (EBT) is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. The candidate will function in a multi-specialty, academic setting practice in the Houston, TX Medical Center. 

 

The Eye Bank Technician I is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank.  The position works to procure tissue from the locale hospitals, morgues and funeral homes.  The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research. The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

 

The Eye Bank Technician I may be required to cover for other technicians, as needed.

Job Duties

  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed basis.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • Contacts families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree either AA, BS or BA.
  • COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO
  • 2 years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
  • Tissue recovery experience.
