Summary

The Eye Bank Specialist is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank.  The position works to procure tissue from the local hospitals, morgues, and funeral homes.  The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research.  The position is responsible for determining whether the tissue is suitable for donation.  The Eye Bank Specialist is responsible for the timely release/suitability determine of ocular tissue for research and/or transplant purposes, and processes tissue according to surgery needs.

Job Duties

  • Upon notification of a decedent, the specialist performs microscopic evaluation of tissue for suitability determination.
  • Performs initial referral screening and internal processing of tissue.
  • Obtains legal consent and communication.  
  • Ability to perform eye recovery procedures and assist in training as needed.
  • Performs dissection and preservation.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree either AA, BS, or BA.
  • Three years in a health care setting, laboratory, surgical setting, experience in tissue banking, funeral homes or working with next of kin.
