The Executive Director and Controller reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer of Baylor College of Medicine. The Controller is responsible for managing multiple functions across the accounting organization for the benefit of the institution, including general accounting, fixed assets accounting, payroll accounting, endowment and gift accounting, and cash reconciliation. The Controller will be responsible for operationalizing strategies that directly influence the processes and functions within accounting. The Controller, in collaboration with the Chief Accounting Officer and Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for managing and maintaining the adequacy of the internal control environment for the College overall. The Controller will manage the annual external audit process for the institution, working directly with the external audit firm and internal business process owners as necessary utilizing matrix leadership across functional areas. The Controller has budget accountability for the accounting function and directly influences broader budget setting processes through maintaining responsibility for workforce planning associated with the accounting function. The Controller will exhibit mastery level knowledge of accounting in conformity with generally accepted accounting standards and will serve as a principle spokesperson for the institution on accounting matters. The Controller will work in collaboration with business owners across academic and nonacademic departments to negotiate and gain cooperation on critical objectives having significant, direct impact on internal stakeholders or that are directly associated with institutional risk management. The Controller will be engaged in establishing departmental strategy that is aligned with institutional strategies and objectives. This position will directly manage the accounting leaders of general accounting, fixed assets accounting, payroll accounting, endowment and gift accounting, and cash reconciliation.

Job Duties
  • Design, implement, manage and maintain an appropriate system of internal controls across all transaction processes. 
  • Ensure that the control architecture is an appropriate combination of specific, pervasive and monitoring controls adequately designed to manage institutional risk relating to the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of all financial information produced by the institution.
  • Build and maintain an appropriate team of professional accountants demonstrating the proficiency and technical skills to manage institutional financial accounting and reporting risk.
  • Participate in discussions with senior leaders for the purpose of recommending strategies associated with new strategic plans and directives.
  • Manage all external auditing processes.
  • Provide and manage reporting to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Manage the monthly close processes.
  • Produce monthly financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Review all tax reporting prepared by the institution as a separate monitoring control to ensure quality and appropriate consistency with GAAP reporting.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Accounting Officer, provide monthly updates to the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Coordination with financial planning and budget, procurement, and Treasury functional areas.
  • Participate as a subject matter expert on all business transformation projects, including improvements to the institution’s enterprise resource platform, and, along with the Chief Accounting Officer, serve as the accountability point for all processes influencing the financial statements for the enterprise.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Master’s degree.
  • Required: Ten years of relevant experience.  Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
