Summary
The Director, Materials Management is responsible for all aspects of the strategy, development, deployment, and management of materials management, inventory management, order management, deliveries, distribution, and logistics across the institution. This position also works cross-functionally and collaboratively with all BCM stakeholder functions and departments, senior/mission leadership, and Supply Chain Services to make sure that BCM Materials Management aligns with overall BCM strategic objectives. This Director will be responsible for the transformation of the BCM Materials Management function both recommending and operationalizing the strategies that are fundamental to this transformation. This position reports to the VP, Supply Chain Services, in Finance. This position may be eligible for an annual performance-based bonus.
This position leads the end-to-end materials management process of getting demand signals from internal stakeholders, filling orders, managing centralized inventories, and optimizing service delivery from Supply Chain Services to the institution. The Director, Materials Management, will be responsible for a total inventory of ~ $400 million and lead a team of 15-20 managers and staff. This role will develop a materials and inventory management roadmap for transformation and change. This role is also expected to lead a materials management service as an operator who is accountable for inventory management, logistics, distribution, deliveries, and reporting to provide a competitive advantage to BCM missions. This position will develop and establish business and operational plans to create the infrastructure, skillsets, and capabilities for delivering an inventory management service across the Baylor College of Medicine. The Director, Materials Management will also be the BCM point of contact for distributors, operations service providers, and partners in our supply chain.
This position is eligible to work hybrid within the Greater Houston, TX area with occasional onsite as needed. Travel between sites within the Texas Medical Center is required.
Job Duties
- Develops a roadmap for transforming the Materials Management function.
- Builds an organization that is best-in-class with lean processes.
- Streamlines ordering, inventory management, and delivery processes, including auto replenishment and advanced materials handling capabilities.
- Creates a customer centric Materials Management service delivering new value across all BCM missions.
- Measures and reports employee and customer satisfaction with the BCM Materials Management function.
- Develops inventory and materials management metrics with well-defined key performance indicators and report quarterly.
- Develops and institutes inventory management procedures that maintain operating standards to protect the Baylor College of Medicine by mitigating risk and maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local laws.
- Leads the upgrade of BCM’s inventory management implementation.
- Builds the infrastructure and teams needed to transform the end-to-end Materials Management function and support BCM through its ERP reimplementation and beyond.
- Benchmarks BCM Materials Management against other medical and healthcare industry providers using recognized benchmarking companies (e.g., Hackett, CAPS, Accenture, Deloitte, or EY) to identify areas of improvement.
- Maximizes the use of GPO contracts and agreements across all BCM affiliates and strategic partner.
- Develops strong working relationships with all internal stakeholders and leadership to become a trusted partner.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Eleven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.
Department-specific Requirements
- Valid driver's license; clean driving record; three years of driving history in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree and seven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience will also be considered.
- A minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in a highly decentralized organization.
- Additional professional certifications in operations and materials management.
- Management responsibility and authority over more than $300 million annual inventories.
- Extensive experience and expertise in operations and inventory management processes, tools, and metrics with a proven track record of building out and managing the entire end-to-end supply chain.
- Proven record of accomplishment in creating well-defined procedures and best practices to include compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ability to both increase visibility of all BCM inventories and analyze opportunities for consolidation of spend, suppliers, and services.
- Well versed in creating a consistent package for reporting materials management and business impact.
- Knowledge of Jaggaer and McKesson automation and supply chain procurement tools.
- Experience in process ownership, aggregating inventories and item SKUs, and the use of common suppliers and service providers in a highly complex and decentralized organization.
- Knowledge of Uniform Guidance is a plus.
- Knowledge of P2P tools, SAP ERP systems, contracting tools, and spend analytics a plus.
- Executive presence, judgment, and positive personal track record in leading in a dynamic organization.
- Dynamic and polished communication style and capability across all executive and management levels, displaying executive presence, savvy, and collegiality.
