The purpose of this role is to provide the support, implementation and strategic effort towards the successful performance of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM).  This includes, but is not limited to, administration of personnel resources/management, financial resources/management, and other operationally related activities.  The role is designed to facilitate the implementation of strategic initiatives by setting goals, mobilizing teams, developing project plans, monitoring progress and performance and providing continual communication and support to CCM management and leadership.  When needed the Director will recommend corrective actions in order to achieve the desire outcomes.


This position is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus.


The BCM Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) operates a large, diverse animal care program that includes 8 vivaria, 25 satellite facilities, and several core laboratory facilities.  CCM employees a staff of approximately 220 professionals, including 9 full-time veterinarians as well as veterinary technicians, trainers, animal care technicians and business office personnel.  The essential skills and duties required of this position will directly support the business office activities and HR related activities in support of ongoing research protocols conducted by faculty investigators.  A knowledge of research methodology, laboratory animal science and the administrative  activities  in support of research (basic science, clinical or animal) in the vivaria, while not required,  is an essential component for success in this position.  


Job Duties

  • Directs and executes day-to-day management of CCM administration activities, including but not limited to, areas of human resources and financial management.
  • Manages multiple teams led by managers and supervisors to include defining work responsibilities and prioritization, setting performance development plans and goals and conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Leads the creation, identification and analysis of metrics to improve business performance.
  • Develops plans to support the growth of research mission through creation and implementation operational plans needed to maximize resources.
  • Addresses issues that impact or impede operations.
  • Anticipates delays and initiates plans for alternative solutions.
  • Develops and implements process improvements, policies, procedures, guidelines and internal controls.
  • Provides support to all CCM through workflow improvement, salary administration, annual capital and facilities plan, improvements in business office and ongoing COVID response management.
  • Provides management and oversight of staff and project team members assigned to strategic initiatives. 
  • Develops staffing plans and productivity guidelines according to budget availability and department needs.
  • Oversees the human resources activities including hiring, terminations, salary administration, and disciplinary actions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Eleven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Seven years of directly related experience with a Master’s degree with four years of supervisory experience.
