The Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, is seeking a part-time Diabetes Educator to join our team in helping to educate our patients, staff and physicians on all aspects surrounding diabetes management. The services will be provided under the Faculty Group Practice program at BCM Medical Center (McNair) campus outpatient clinical practice.

Job Purpose

The Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)  provides patient education on a diabetes diagnosis, including nutrition, medication, physical activity, and glucose testing.

Job Duties
  • Provides formal diabetes education to patients in outpatient clinic.
  • Provides diabetic education training to other clinical staff as needed.
  • Provide nutritional information for weight control and disease management.
  • Schedule appointments, tests, and examinations with hospital and other doctor’s offices.
  • Document patient care services by charting in patient’s record.
  • Instructs patient regarding diabetes self-management.
  • Communicates with other health care professionals regarding orders and care of patients.
  • Promotes patient’s independence by involving patient in defining and establishing patient care goals; teaching and counseling patient, friends, and family and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills.
  • Respects and supports patient rights and promotes positive family and patient relations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Bachelor's degree.
  • Required: Two years of relevant experience.
