Summary

This position is located within IQuESt, the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety. We are the largest center for Health Services Research within the Southwest. We conduct high-quality scientific research that improves the health of patients across the nation, by helping to ensure the patient-centered delivery of scientific discoveries. We are seeking a Data Scientist who will be responsible for developing and applying advanced statistical, machine learning, and artificial intelligence methods to large-scale clinical and administrative healthcare datasets; collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to design impactful research studies; and creating predictive models, natural language processing pipelines, and reproducible analytic workflows that support high‑quality scientific publications and improve healthcare delivery. 

Job Duties

Machine Learning & Statistical Model Development (35%)

  • Design, develop, and validate machine learning, deep learning, and statistical models using structured and unstructured healthcare data, including VA CDW, CMS, NIH, and physiologic signal repositories.
  • Conduct feature engineering, model selection, hyperparameter tuning, and evaluation using appropriate statistical methodologies and advanced deep learning techniques (CNNs, transformers, multimodal fusion).

 

NLP & Data Pipeline Development (25%)

  • Develop and maintain NLP pipelines and LLM-based tools to automate extraction of clinical information from electronic health records.
  • Build reproducible data processing pipelines for structured datasets, time-series signals, polysomnography, wearable sensors, and continuous monitoring data.

 

Research Collaboration & Study Design (20%)

  • Collaborate with clinicians, engineers, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and research staff to define research objectives and translate clinical questions into computational methods.

 

Dissemination & Reporting (20%)

  • Prepare manuscripts, visualizations, technical reports, and grant materials.
  • Present findings at institutional, national, and international meetings. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in statistics, science, mathematics or related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
