Job Purpose

Genetic Counseling Assistant to provide support to genetic counselors and physicians through coordination and administration of projects and processes for the Genetics clinics.

Job Duties
  • Review patient schedules for new patient appointments to assure appropriateness of referral and relevant medical records received.
  • Complete administrative calls to patients, healthcare providers, and genetic testing laboratories.
  • Screen phone calls to Genetic Counselors.
  • Obtain complete and detailed information from callers to the clinical genetic offices for general genetic counselor inquiries; answer questions about the status of insurance authorization, status of genetic testing, requests for clinic notes/school letters; transfer to Genetic Counselors' phone for more detailed inquiries.
  • Sort and reply to faxes; handle records requests and items that require physician signatures such as school OHI forms; sends to be scanned to child's medical record.
  • Take full responsibility for test results, records reviews, other tasks that are best handled by a Genetic Counselor.

  • Collect necessary records such as previous genetic testing, medical records, and HIPAA authorizations.
  • Write letters of medical necessity (LMN) to insurance companies for routine tests (ex: CMA, Fragile X, common panels).
  • Send families WES video consent instructions, fill out requisition and blood draw forms for genetic tests and ready them for pick-up by families.
  • Review schedule and send reminder messages through Consultagene portal to complete journey for those who have not.
  • Interact with faculty, staff and students to promote the goals and objectives of the genetic clinics.
  • May present project data and components to health care professionals at our team meetings.
  • Assist with sending out follow-up reminder letters to inpatient families.
  • Maintain patient database.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: High School diploma or GED.
  • Required: Two years of relevant experience.
