Salary Range:  $130,000 - $160,000
FLSA Status:  Exempt
Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Summary

The Clinical Veterinarian provides comprehensive veterinary care for research animals while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and scientific support. CCM veterinarians are responsible for assigned research facilities and perform daily clinical oversight, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, prescription and monitoring of medications, and maintenance of accurate animal health records. This role plays a critical part in supporting biomedical research by partnering with investigators and research staff. The Clinical Veterinarian is also essential to ensuring institutional compliance with all applicable animal welfare laws, regulations, and accreditation standards. The role requires independent professional judgment and full autonomy in clinical decision‑making consistent with veterinary licensure, institutional policy, and regulatory standards.

 

Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis, to cover on call duty including veterinary medical support and emergencies.  This position is considered essential personnel which will require work during emergency situations (hurricanes, floods, etc.).

Job Duties

  • Independently provides veterinary care and programmatic support for laboratory animals.
  • Exercises a high level of independent judgment and autonomy in clinical decision‑making, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and animal welfare determinations, within established institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides comprehensive clinical care for a wide variety of laboratory animal species through daily observation, diagnosis, development and oversight of treatment plans, prescription and monitoring of medications, and maintenance of complete and accurate medical records.
  • Performs routine veterinary rounds across assigned research facilities and responds to emergent animal health issues.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Works closely with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and serves as a voting member or alternate member, participating in protocol review, facility and laboratory inspections, policy development, subcommittee activities, and programmatic reviews.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable animal care and use regulations and standards, including USDA, AAALAC, and OLAW, and supports continuous inspection readiness.
  • Provides research and investigator support.
  • Collaborates with investigators to support protocol development, animal model selection and optimization, and application of appropriate veterinary and animal care practices to ensure scientific integrity and animal welfare. 
  • Plans, executes, and follows up on technical and research-related projects as assigned, supporting institutional research objectives.
  • Develops and implements veterinary and animal care programs.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains procedures related to the acquisition, quarantine, care, use, and disposition of research animals.
  • Coordinates with management and institutional partners, serving as a liaison on animal health, welfare, and programmatic issues.
  • Provides training, education, and mentorship.
  • Provides instruction and training to animal users, veterinary technicians, husbandry staff, veterinary students, and residents, including diagnostics, animal handling, procedural techniques, and clinical care practices.
  • Contributes to professional development and workforce readiness within the animal care and research community.
  • Assists the Director and Executive Director in oversight of the institutional animal care and use program, contributing to strategic planning and program development.
  • Participates in development and implementation of policies related to veterinary care, surgery, and enrichment.
  • Represents Veterinary Services on institutional committees and in cross‑functional planning initiatives. 
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD).
  • Two years of relevant experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Licensed Veterinarian by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Provisional license is accepted at the time of hire, however, Veterinary License by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners must be obtained within six months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) approved residency training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification.
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and guidelines that govern animal research, research conduct principles and current methodology of laboratory animal medicine and management required.
  • Advanced experience/skill in at least one area including: primate medicine/surgery; specialized rodent surgery; large animal medicine/surgery; rodent health surveillance and quarantine; and/or biological/chemical hazard experience.
