Manages and coordinates the activities of the Baylor College of Medicine Cytopathology Laboratory.

Job Duties

Regulatory compliance

  • Develop new tests in accordance with the federal regulation (CLIA).
  • Ensure that all CAP/CLIA requirements and checklists are followed and documented.
  • Work closely with the Medical Director to ensure compliance and proper documentation.
  • Prepare and revise cytology and QM procedures as needed.
  • Prepare GYN quarterly reports for all clients.
  • Maintain workload records and workload assessments for all cytotechnologists and pathologists.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements for cytotechnologists and pathologists.
  • Analyze data and prepare QI reports for all designated monthly/quarterly cytology indicators.
  • Meet with Medical Director, at minimum, quarterly to discuss trends and actions needed, preparing, and distributing agendas.
  • Ensure all cytology and QM Manuals are current, reviewed and signed by the Medical Director.
  • Prepare Annual QM Summary for cytology and present to Medical Director at the end of each calendar year.
  • Prepare the annual QM Plan for cytology based on the Annual QM Summary with Medical Director.
  • Order, distribute, track, and maintain records for GYN CAP PT and GYN continuing education for all facilities/pathologists.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all new cytology staff training and assessments.


Business growth

  •  Assist in gaining pathology business by visiting potential and current clients.
  • Follow market trends to propose new tests, utilize new technologies.
  • Design marketing material, pathology requisitions, and specimens’ kits as needed.
  • Interact with vendors, referring laboratories, outside testing personnel and advising the medical director regarding purchase agreements.


BCM pathology vision

  • Validate, train, scan and create digital images for pathology review.
  • Keep abreast of new developments/technology in cytology.


Physician support

  • Train pathologists, cytotechnologists, and lab staff on Orchard LIS and LIS updates/changes.
  • Proof molecular results in LIS prior to pathologist sign out.
  • Maintain meeting minutes from meetings with Medical Director.


Supervise all cytology lab staff, molecular lab staff and cytotechnologist.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.
  • Certified Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
