Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Technologies in the Office of Information Technology, the Business Analyst will be primarily supporting new academic technology initiatives for the School of Medicine, which supports both the Houston and regional campus located in Temple, Texas. Members of the Academic Technologies department are based in Houston, Texas with many in the department working remotely. Regular travel to the regional campus is not expected; however, there may be occasional site visits based on project needs. The Business Analyst's role is to elicit, analyze, specify, and validate the business needs of stakeholders. This includes interviewing stakeholders, gathering and compiling user requirements to understand the technology solutions needed, and collaborating with other team members to identify potential solutions. The business analyst will also be asked to lead quality assurance testing on projects, creating and completing test cases, and ensuring the solution implemented meets the needs of our stakeholders.


The internal title for this position is IT Project Management Associate; the working title is Business Analyst.


This position is eligible to work a hybrid work arrangement.

Job Duties

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborates with project sponsors and stakeholders to determine project scope and vision.
  • Identifies project stakeholders and establishes user classes, as well as their characteristics.
  • Conducts interviews to gather user requirements via workshops, questionnaires, surveys, site visits, workflow storyboards, use cases, scenarios, and other methods.
  • Identifies and establishes scope and parameters of requirements analysis on a project-by-project basis to define project impact, outcome criteria, and metrics.
  • Works with stakeholders and project team to prioritize collected requirements.


Acquisition & Deployment

  • Assists in conducting research on software and hardware products to meet agreed upon requirements and to support purchasing efforts. 
  • Participates in the QA of purchased solutions to ensure features and functions have been enabled and optimized.
  • Participates in the selection of any requirements documentation software solutions that the organization may opt to use.


Operational Management 

  • Analyzes and verifies requirements for completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, feasibility, and conformity to standards. 
  • Develops and utilizes standard templates to accurately and concisely write requirements specifications.
  • Translates conceptual user requirements into functional requirements in a clear manner that is comprehensible to developers/project team.
  • May develop prototypes of interfaces and attributes based on the user requirements.
  • Creates process models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to developers and/or the project team.
  • Develops and conducts peer reviews of the business requirements to ensure that requirement specifications are correctly interpreted.
  • Assists with the interpretation of user requirements into feasible options and communicating these back to the business stakeholders. 
  • Manages and tracks the status of requirements throughout the project lifecycle; enforce and redefine as necessary.
  • Communicates changes, enhancements, and modifications of business requirements– verbally or through written documentation – to project managers, sponsors, and other stakeholders so that issues and solutions are understood. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.  Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement. 
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience performing or leading business analysis projects.
