Summary
The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join its clinical care team in the Jamail Specialty Center. The Ophthalmic Technician I provides technical and clinical support to ophthalmologists, optometrists, residents, fellows, and other healthcare providers in the delivery of patient care. This entry-level position assists with patient assessments, performs basic ophthalmic testing, prepares patients for examinations and procedures, maintains exam rooms and equipment, and supports efficient clinic operations in an academic medical center environment.
Job Duties
Patient Care and Clinical Support
- Escorts and prepares patients for ophthalmic examinations and procedures.
- Obtains and documents medical, ocular, surgical, family, and medication histories.
- Records chief complaints and pertinent patient information in the electronic medical record.
- Assists providers during patient examinations and minor office procedures.
Diagnostic Testing
- Performs routine ophthalmic testing as trained and assigned.
- Prepares examination rooms and equipment for patient visits.
- Cleans, disinfects, and maintains ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment.
- Stocks supplies and maintains inventory levels within assigned clinic areas.
- Ensures examination and procedure rooms remain organized and operational throughout the clinic day.
Documentation and Compliance
- Accurately enters patient information and tests results into the electronic medical record.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and institutional policies.
- Adheres to infection prevention, workplace safety, and quality standards.
- Follows departmental procedures and regulatory requirements.
Teamwork and Professional Development
- Collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, technicians, administrative staff, residents, and fellows.
- Participates in departmental training, staff meetings, and educational activities.
- Completes competency assessments and professional development activities as required.
- Demonstrates a commitment to customer service, professionalism, and patient-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an ophthalmic technician or medical assistant training program.
