Summary
The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. This position supports activities related to research animal care. Monitors and reinforces standard operating procedures, policies, and requirements for animal care staff.
Job Duties
- Able to perform all duties of aquatics LAT I, II, II, and advanced skills
- Supports adherence to standard operating procedures and industry standards, along with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidance documents
- Interacts and coordinates with staff to assure health and welfare of animals
- Escalates operational, personnel, or compliance concerns to management as appropriate
- Assists with coordinating daily work activities to animal care staff
- Provides reports on facility function, personnel issues, inventory, data collection, and room/animal logs and records
- Identifies and reports equipment failure and ensures facility and equipment maintenance and repairs occur in a timely manner
- Ensures an adequate inventory of feed, bedding, and supplies is available to support facility operations
- Reviews animal census reports for accuracy and completes in timely manner
- Assists faculty and researchers regarding husbandry needs
- Provides guidance, coaching and training to Specialty LAT staff and assigns work activities
- Serves as a resource for less experienced team members
- Maintain inventory and request supplies as needed.
- Schedule and perform facility tours with new research personnel.
- Documents study-related data and communicates critical information and test results to stakeholders outside the division, including research clients external to BCM
- Frequently performs non-routine work tasks such as redistribution of daily tasks, addressing unforeseen problems using expert knowledge in unique and specialized animal housing systems.
- Performs Other job related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with aquatic species preferred.
