Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Summary

The Flow Cytometry Specialist II is responsible for leading operations at the satellite flow cytometry facility at Texas Heart Institute (THI), which is now part of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). The role requires advanced expertise in flow cytometry and cell sorting, with responsibilities spanning both the THI and BCM main campus cores. The specialist will ensure high-quality service delivery, support critical research experiments (including after-hours with advance notice), and contribute to the development and implementation of new technologies and protocols.  This is a client facing role, so customer service will be part of this position.

Job Duties

•    Operates and manages the THI satellite cytometry facility, ensuring seamless integration with BCM’s Cytometry and Cell Sorting Core.
•    Performs advanced flow cytometry and cell sorting on specimens from blood, bone marrow, and various tissues.
•    Provides remote and on-site support for data acquisition, analysis, validation, and quality control.
•    Collaborates with researchers to design and execute complex experiments; provide technical consultation and troubleshooting.
•    Maintains accurate records of samples, procedures, and results, including patient demographic data when applicable.
•    Supervises and mentors junior staff and trainees; provides training on instrumentation and protocols.
•    Accommodates occasional off-hour or after-hours experimental appointments with clients, provided they are scheduled in advance and align with critical research needs.
•    Participates in the presentation and publication of research findings.
•    Stays current with advancements in cytometry and related technologies; implements improvements and innovations.
•    Provides after-hours support for critical experiments with prior arrangement.
•    Travels between THI and BCM main campus as needed; remote work is expected from either location.
•    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, biological, physical science or related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a related field.
  • ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) as a Specialist in Cytology, Certified Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Technologist.
  • Experimental design experience.
  • Ability to interact with clients in a customer service capacity.
