Job Title:  Clinical Veterinarian
Division:  Center for Comparative Medicine
Work Arrangement:  Onsite only
Location:  Houston, TX
Salary Range:  $110,000 - $130,000
FLSA Status:  Exempt
Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Summary

The Clinical Veterinarian will be responsible for providing care to research animals in assigned facilities, including the observation of animals, diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions, prescription and monitoring of necessary medications, and maintenance of animal health records.  Standard vivarium environment with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Will provide veterinary emergency coverage nights, weekend, and holidays on a rotating basis. 

Job Duties

  • Provide veterinary clinical care for the animals at BCM.
  • Perform veterinary rounds as scheduled, and provide clinical care and preventive medicine support.
  • Perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice to facilitate protocol development.
  • Assist in training for laboratory animal residents, veterinary technicians, and research staff. 
  • Training may include veterinary diagnostics, techniques and minor surgical procedures.
  • Provide animal health care guidance for veterinary services personnel as required.
  • Ensure that reports and other materials are prepared and submitted as required.
  • Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, program review and facility inspections.
  • Serve on the IACUC as voting member or alternate member.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards that relate to animal care and use.
  • Make recommendations and assist in establishing and enhancing veterinary and animal care standards.
  • Use controlled substances and be responsible for maintaining appropriate records.
  • Provide veterinary emergency coverage nights, weekend, and holidays on a rotating basis.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD).
  • Two years of relevant experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Licensed Veterinarian by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Provisional license is accepted at the time of hire, however, Veterinary License by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners must be obtained within six months of hire.

Department Specific Criteria

  • DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school and licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the USA.
  • Obtain a practitioner’s DEA registration within 6 months of hire.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principals and practices of veterinary medicine.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with the specialized equipment and materials used in veterinary medicine.
  • A thorough knowledge of all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines relating to the use of research animals.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, investigators, research staff, and institutional administrators.
  • Experience in an academic research environment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) approved residency training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Specialized knowledge or experience with large animal surgery and model development. 
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification.
