Summary

The General Thoracic Surgery division of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a licensed Advanced Practice Nurse to provide enthusiastic and high-quality patient care in a clinical setting under the direction of three physicians. The preferred candidate will have a working knowledge and growing interest in the perioperative and postoperative care of patients who have pathologic chest conditions.

Job Purpose

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.

Job Duties

  • Conducts comprehensive history and physical examination of each patient and coordinates with Attendings in developing a treatment plan.
  • Performs or orders x-rays, CT scans, MRIs Electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures and interprets results.
  • Administers such therapeutic procedures as chest tube removal, CVC removal, suturing, wound care and injections.
  • Evaluates and modifies the plan of care as needed (under the direction of the attending physician).
  • Instructs patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, preoperative actions and preparation, postoperative care, and home care and health maintenance.
  • Prescribes, dispenses, and administers pharmaceutical treatments to patients.
  • Assists in coordinating with other members of the healthcare team---nurses, dietitians, chaplains, consulting physicians and social workers to provide holistic care for each patient.
  • Provides health education as well as postoperative care education to patients and family members.
  • Assists in providing nursing education to nurses, nursing students and other health professionals.
  • Continually updates and maintains required records in the EPIC electronic medical record system.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records and writes progress notes on patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in in Nursing.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification is preferred.
  • One to two years caring for Thoracic surgery patients is preferred.
