Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a skilled Eye Bank Technician. The Eye Bank Technician II is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. The Eye Bank Technician II will function in a multi-specialty, academic setting practice in the Houston, TX Medical Center. 

 

This position will screen potential donors for suitability, approach families for donation, and remove ocular tissue for transplant purposes from cadavers. The candidate must be able to multi-task, critically think, pay attention to details, and be a fast learner.  Knowledge of medical terminology and aseptic technique is a bonus, but not required.  Paid on-the-job training is provided.

Job Duties

  • Evaluates corneal tissue and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed basis.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • Contacts families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains a clean and safe laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or Health Science.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
